Two former Cotton Kings shine in pro debuts!

Cotton King hurler A.J. Ford signed a free agent deal with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. As a Cotton King in 07, A.J. had a 1-1 record with over a strike out per inning. He played junior college ball at Chandler-Gilbert Community College in Arizona and the last two years at division 1 University of Louisiana Monroe where he was 5-5 with 55 strikeouts in 45 innings.

A.J. had an impressive pro debut posting a 1-1 record with a 3.18 ERA striking out 21 in 28 1/3 innings while walking just 5 for the Arizona Rookie League Angels.

For frequently updated pictures of any player in the Anaheim Angels minor league system be sure to visit www.futureangels.com . Special thanks for their permission to use the picture of A.J. in a pro uniform. The shot is similar to that of picture we took of him in action for the Cotton Kings. Although the pictures are similar in the angle, it's obvious that the later is far superior. Should you know anyone in Angels minor league system or are simply a fan of the game I strongly recommend visiting the future angels website.

In a matter of a few weeks he went from toeing the rubber at Kiwanis Field for the Cotton Kings to getting himself established in the professional ranks. Thinking back to when he informed us of his pro contract, he was almost apologetic. That's just the kind of kid he is. From the time he joined the Cotton Kings he was committed to getting them to the World Series in Wichita, KS.

To follow his statistics, I created the following link to his minor league numbers. Simply click on his name...

A. J. Ford

Isaac Hess signed with the Windy City Thunder Bolts of the Independent Frontier league. The former hurler at South Mountain Community College played a major part in the Cougars 2005 NJCAA World Series appearance. Isaac joined the Cotton Kings in the summer of 2006 and in the NABA World Series in October of that same year. He made the most of his professional opportunity by going 8-1 with a 2.56 ERA while striking out 29 in 31 2/3 innings. A stellar performance in and of itself.

Isaac didn't stop there. In the post season he was a key contributor to the Thunder Bolts first title and earned the Frontier League Championship Series MVP!

For those of you who have the pleasure of knowing him, he's a great story of perseverance and has overcome unimaginable adversity to get where he is. You'll never meet a more humble, gracious, and deserving young man. A degree (University of Arizona) and a pro contract within the same month - outstanding!!!

We're extremely proud of both Isaac and A.J., please join us in congratulating them.

Without their help the Cotton Kings would have been without lights and bases.

Summer development leading to collegiate success

The primary focus of the Cotton Kings is the development of collegiate players. Members of the 2005 Cotton Kings are experiencing successful college seasons after a summer of swinging wood bats in the PSWBL. The following 2005 Cotton Kings are paying huge dividends for Coach Bass and the Wayland Baptist Pioneers in Plainview, TX.

Sean Iverson has made the most of his new home at Wayland after transferring from Texas Tech. He spent his first two college seasons at Mesa Community College where he played for Coach Tony Cirelli. Although 2005 was his first season with the Cotton Kings, Ivy and Cotton King GM Joe Walter both played on a very good amateur team known as the Arizona Mavericks when Sean was a "kid" in 2001.

Ivy was among the Cotton King team leaders with a .289 average, 37 hits, 8 doubles, a homerun, and drove in 24 runs while swinging wood bats in the highly competitive PSWBL. He played every position around the infield and even caught a game for us. Be sure to follow Sean and the rest of the Pioneers in their 2006 campaign. He's currently hitting .435 with 9 homeruns and 39 RBI.

Chase Deleon is a Cotton King veteran in their new era. In the summer of 2004 Chase was a member of the first Cotton King team to take the field in over 40 years, where he hit a solid .388. Chase played his first two collegiate seasons at Phoenix College.

On the field Chase plays very aggressive. He puts pressure on the infield by running hard out of the box and defensively he's good for 'web gem' once a game. You won't see him give away an at-bat. He's currently hitting .358 with 7 homeruns and 34 RBI.

Joe Covarubbias hits a walk-off homerun against NAIA power Bellevue, NE (pictured left). Joe is currently batting .363 with 5 homeruns and 23 RBI.

Jon Reynoso played for the Cotton Kings in 2004 before joining the Havasu Heat. As a Cotton King he hit .369 with 6 homeruns and 32 RBIs. Jon currently has 6 homeruns and 22 RBI.

Shea Clark is another former Cotton King and current Pioneer.

Ricardo Cruz making his mark in the D-backs farm system

Former Cotton King Ricardo Cruz made his professional debut in the summer of 2005 by leading the Missoula Osprey (AZ Diamondback affiliate) of the Pioneer League with 10 home runs. Ricardo helped the Cotton Kings win the 2004 National Adult Baseball Association 18A World Championship going 11 for 30 (.367) with a home run, 5 doubles, and 10 RBI while playing stellar defense at shortstop. A month later he helped the Cotton Kings earn bragging rights as they won the Guadalupe Thanksgiving tournament for the first time in their existence. Ricardo played collegiate ball at Yavapai College in Prescott from 2002-2003 for Sky Smeltzer.

The Osprey organization had nothing but good things to say about Ricardo. One team official said "He was always one of the first to volunteer to work a youth baseball camp or sign autographs and we never had to worry about him getting into trouble". Anyone who knows the kid will agree. He has the utmost respect for the game and his opponent. He doesn't show anybody up, even when he hits a tape measure shot. It's refreshing to see someone with that kind of talent demonstrate the same level of sportsmanship.

Parents: if you're looking for a positive role model for your children and an example of a class act, look no further than Ricardo.

***Special thanks to the Missoula Osprey Professional Baseball Club for the photos.
